One of the most important elements of your home or commercial building is the roof. It’s what keeps your building a high-quality shelter for you, your family, or your employees. Since it’s a large investment, it’s important to get it right: a leaky roof can damage the property, result in mold that can cause health problems, and cost you a fortune in ongoing repairs. Picking a roofer can be a daunting prospect. So how do you ensure you’re engaging the right company? 

For starters, you should speak to several roofing companies before narrowing down your choice. It helps to make a list of your requirements first and have a good idea of your budget so you can choose a company that can work with both. 

Start Your Research Online

Most roofing companies offer a gallery of their work on their website so you can look through examples of their work to see if it’s a good match for you, and help you determine the extent of its back-catalog of projects. You can also check reviews and recommendations online and look at Better Business Bureau or Chamber of Commerce ratings. Don’t be afraid to ask to speak with existing companies: a good roofer will not hesitate to give you references. 

Understand the Scope of Work Beforehand

Before you can evaluate a quote, you need to know what the work will involve so you can be sure the company is prepared to meet your needs. Quotes may vary from company to company, so it helps to have the knowledge to evaluate proposals to be sure they include all the work that will need to be done to install your new roof. 

Evaluate Their Level of Professionalism

Does the roofer return your messages or answer your questions properly? Are they willing to show you examples of their work? Are they polite and helpful? The company should be willing to present some of their previous projects for you, including ones that closely match your needs. 

Look for Transparency in Costs

Handshake agreements aren’t good enough for a project as large as a roof. Look for a company that presents its proposal for the project in a transparent way, with detailed information about cost projections. Beware of a company that is unwilling to offer free roof inspections and estimates with no obligation, or one that comes in significantly lower in costs than your other estimates. 

Be Sure the Timing Works

We’ve all read about roofing projects that seem to go on forever because the roofer has too many other commitments. Ask for a hard number regarding how long it will take the roofer to complete your project. There should not be a major discrepancy in the time it would take for each company to complete their work.
